Internal migration following adverse life events: Assessing the likelihood of return migration and migration toward family

Abstract There are well‐documented associations between life course changes and migration; yet, the occurrence, order, timing of reasons for migrating growing increasingly diverse. Migration following adverse events, such as a divorce or an involuntary job loss, may be qualitatively distinct from migration undertaken other reasons. Moves, especially long‐distance moves, defined more by seeking family familiar locations. Moreover, heightened probability occur not only immediately after event but also in years after. We explore these questions US context with longitudinal data 1983 to 2019 waves Panel Study Income Dynamics, which provides information on residential locations, locations members, events individuals over time. focus five specific events: divorce, death spouse, onset chronic physical health condition, mental condition. Using multivariate regression, we find that loss induce return moves towards family.
